So this should not be  a seedling any more but it was lost under over-growth in the nursery until recently.

My guess is a Copernicia but far from sure.

Any ideas appreciated.

Located on Vanua Levu near Savusavu (16degrees South) Elevation from sealevel to 30meters with average annual rainfall of 2800mm (110in) with temperature from 18 to 34C (65 to 92F).

Your guess is correct. Most likely a baileyana, though too young to know if it is a hybrid or not. I should know...

Haha, all Copernicia have that, and they will get you good, even if you are careful! Cant tell you how many times they have got me in the hand or arm-they usually break off in the wound...
