Just saw this on the front page of the Wall Street Journal.

ouch

Here's a link to CNN, hope our friends in Iberia are all okay.

"The head of Portugal's judiciary police told reporters the fire was started by lightning. "We have been able to determine that the origin of the fire was caused by dry thunderstorms," José Maria Almeida Rodrigues said, according to the Portuguese state-run news agency Lusa."

"The blaze spread Saturday to the Pedrógão Grande community, forcing residents to flee the area to escape towering flames. Pedrógão Grande is about 120 miles north of Lisbon."

"Many cars could not get out and people burned to death inside their cars," Interior Ministry official Jorge Gomes told CNN affiliate TVI. Hundreds of firefighters were still fighting the flames Monday.

Wow, looks like the terrain in our Sierra - hope they control the fires soon!

Reminds me too damn much of LA back in 1992 and 1993. Fires all over, some natural some human-set.

Huge parts of Spain and Portugal have been experiencing temperatures over 40 degrees (104F) the last few days. This combinated with the endless dryness a dry thunderstorm caused this problems. Europe, specially the western parts is experiencing quite a early and warm spring/summer. Bushfires, 40 degrees is not uncommen but this early we don't see too much.

Even here in northwest Europe there are some area's with drought regulations at the moment or warnings for wildfires. From the last 12 months, 9 of them were much drier than normal and also warmer and sunnier than average. The other 3 months were mostly average but felt in winter were the evaporation is very low.

It's a tragedy. I would like to point out that the 80% of wildfires (at least in Spain) are caused by humans (30% of that part are accidents and negligences and the rest are deliberated) and only a 4% is caused by natural factors. The causes of this wildfire remaind unknown but I read the chief of the fire brigades believes it was intentional. If this results to be true, the person will be responsable of accidental/imprudent homicide.

Climatechange, it is proven that this is going much faster at this part of the world, at least in Western Europe than world Average.
Of course we still see cold and sometimes frosty periods, but in general the weather is much warmer in winter and summer than 10-15 years ago.
