Possible new travel restrictions to Cuba in June

While the Miami Herald reports that more than 50 senators support eliminating travel restrictions to Cuba, the conservative Daily Caller reports that President Trump will make a speech on Cuba in June and likely enforce travel restrictions.

The recent period of easy, convenient travel to Cuba has brought many benefits.  Lots of palm enthusiasts and scientists have gotten to visit.  Let's hope that access continues.  It's good for everybody.

Reuters expects re-imposition of travel restrictions.  The Miami Herald is not reporting anything, other than the more than 50 members of the US  Senate who introduced legislation to get rid of travel restrictions.

There's a lot to be gotten rid of, including travel restrictions.

The White House has gotten rid of the "honor system" for palm and other natural history visits.  Federal agencies (I think it's Treasury for most travel) will have to work out new methods to audit visits and to require that "people to people" visits have US-approved minders.

I regret making only one visit during the brief period of minimal restrictions, and am happy for everyone else who made such trips.

I suppose it would be fairly easy to get a round trip to Cienfuegos and visit the Botanical Garden.

The Miami Herald has a good news story.

Miami Herald reporter discussion on Facebook says the actual document will be available when signed, tomorrow (June 16).   It'll likely take 90 days to adopt new rules.  You may not be able to stay at a larger hotel, but it looks like casas particulares and airbnb will be fine.  As is the case now, keep your travel records and receipts (currently, you're supposed to keep them for 5 years).

Airlines and cruises will continue to go to Cuba.

The informal palm visits that have flourished under the recent relaxation appear to be forbidden, unless very formal sponsorship, with minders, is arranged.  In that case, activity by participants will have to be carefully monitored and records kept.  They will be audited.  There will be more information once final rules are published.

You're warmly welcome for palm visits in Sri Lanka.
