I wasn't joking, I got a Washy from Lowes and it is going in the ground. In the winter I will use a heat wire, thermocube, and a tarp. I will post a pic when I plant it.

Wonderful exemplar!  Take its measurements. I bet it will grow hastily.

I've asked that before.  Never got an answer, however I believe he is somewhere near the Richmond area, likely south / east of it a bit since he mentions his zone as a 7b/8a.      There was a man in Washington DC's northern suburbs in MD that grew a Washy for some 15-20 years before he finally got to old to climb a latter that tall to build its protection each winter.  It subsequently perished in the following winter.  Sad, but it had a great run especially for being so far north for a Washy!

If this one gets that kind of protection, I would imagine it could make it just as long, but from my knowledge and experience, even the warmest part of VA (Va Beach area) they cannot survive long term without protection.

Just South of Richmond, right where zone 7a and 7b meet. I have heard of some washingtonia before in Virginia Beach that pulled through a year or two without protection, but they didn't last any longer than that.
