Archontophoenix New Red Leaf

I didn't realize archontophoenix can throw out new leaves with color in them! I was making coffee this morning and noticed the spear on one of my archontophoenix opened up with a really neat, red color to it. Too bad the picture doesn't quite capture the color!

Oh yes, they do that sometimes. Nothing like a Chambey, but a nice surprise. A. tuckeri and maxima do it quite a bit in the winter time, off and on. Not sure what triggers that.

I've noticed some of the NE NSW A. cunninghamiana populations appear to always open red new leaves, but I have not noticed it on southern populations. May be pure coincidence, I've spent much more time looking at N than S population areas. The red new leaves seems often to coincide with narrower leaflets and thinner trunks, which also appears provenance related to at least some extent.

If that tree was in my garden I would say its genetics came from NE NSW, the thinner leaflets, finer trunk detail and red new leaf mark it as distinctly different from some of the more robust populations.
