Filifera vs filibusta street in Sicily Italy

Hi,

In the streetview link below you can perfectly see the differences between pure filifera and filibuster. The median of the street is lined with washingtonia's:

First a filibusta

followed by 4 pure filifera

and then 3 filibusters again.

If you switch back to the date of planting you can see the differences between these at an early age.

So if you move one step forward you have the option of viewing them in november 2010. Even as small plants the differences are clear. The filiferas have straight upright petioles and deeply divided matt green fronds. Its also interesting to see the filibusta's all took off faster than the filifera's.

Ohh yes, those middle 4 are filifera alright. Look at the size of the base- humongous! Great comparison.

It's a good comparison. Note the different color of the leaves! filibustas are vibrant green as robustas and filiferas are that kind of dull green. Nice to see side to side.

Southern Italy has great examples of what palms are grown in the Mediterranean.

I love El Paso for all the filifera's and filibusta's. I found this nice example of both side by side. Every defining traith is visible: trunk sizes, glossy green vs dull fronds, longer petioles, petioles of filifera more straight, brown patches at petioles, hardiness of fronds, fronds size filifera larger with drooping leaflets. And also the way filibusta fronds bend downwards from the petiole is clearly different from filifera.
