Is it Dead? Or should I prune?

Hello all.  Need your help.  Bought a windmill palm last August for wife.  Live in Ohio so was suspect if it would survive or not.

Planted and wrapped it in some burlap over the winter.  A mild winter this past year, but when I unwrapped it all the palms were brown.  I checked it out and I do see some green still on the bottom of some of the palms.  So I think it is still alive.

should I prune back all of the palms?  They are brown as could be. I was thinking that is how it will get food, but they are all brown anyways.

just not sure what to do.

thanks!

That doesn't look good I'm afraid. Try giving the centre spear a gentle pull and see if it comes out. If it does the growing point has rotted. You can cut off all the dead fronds as these will be no use to the palm.

Thanks Neil.

Yeah I pruned some, but was not sure if I should take them all off.

I will try your suggestion and check back.

If anyone on here is from Zone 6, how do you protect your palm during winter? Would love to hear what you do.

Thanks!

Dan

I don't think there is anyway that palm will survive. That looks as dead as can be. I also don't think they will make it in your zone without a lot more protection than burlap.

I would try a needle palm instead and cover it with a trash can next time.

Los Angeles, CA and Myrtle Beach, SC.
