My Cyphophoenix Nucele finally planted

Cape Garrett

Recommended Posts

Finally got her planted between my Pinanga coronata and Licuala spinosa.  She's looking good.  Part sun in the morning on the north side of a row of arecas used for privacy.  Gets morning and a bit of late day sun.  Hopefully stays as happy as she was in her pot.  I want to plant my Ravenea hildebrandtii but I'm not sure how much sun.  Anyone have one of these planted out in Southwest or South Florida?  Sun or shade?  Is now under a king palm in a pot with a bit of morning sun.  Can they take more sun?  Anyone have any pictures?  She's rooted in the ground so I need to find the best spot.  Thanks.

A very tough and hardy palm....... I saw one of these growing on their native island of Lifou, New Caledonia on almost the exact same latitude as where I live...... It was growing fully exposed in fairly dry conditions, I have heard that they take sun from an early age.

I'm in a significantly different climate here in the SF Bay Area but I can tell you that the two I have in the ground in full shade are doing extremely well. Growth can't be described as fast but not slow either. I love the species' very deep glossy green foliage.

Is this true?

Anyone?

I planted mine in 2015. First year it was with 40% shadecloth and between banana trees.

Last year i removed the shadecloth and the banana trees. The old leaves were sunburned, but the new leaves are perfect growing in partial sun.

This is mine today, healthy but showing cold damage after a bad week in January.

Garret,

How about an update on the Cyphophoenix Nucele.  I just purchased a small one and was wondering how much sun it would take.

Hey Joe.  She's doing great and almost ready to open a second leaf since planted.  Gets morning sun from about 8:30 am to noon.  Then bright shade until late in the day then dappled sun for an hour or so.  Lots of water from drainage downspout but quick draining as my soil is calcareous and a bit sandy.  No burn on the leaves at all...in Winter it will be in bright shade.  Same exposure as when she was potted.  Great looking palm.
