Cyclone Debbie Relief Effort

To All My Fellow Palm Nutters from All over the World,

This week Cyclone Debbie has left one of the most beautiful tropical places in the world, the Whitsundays, Australia absolutely devastated.

With wind speeds of 263km/hr (163mi/hr) and over 8metre (26ft) storm surges coupled with Debbies slowness and unprecedented strength, she pretty much destroyed the region and has left it in a state that is almost unrecognisable.

Many people have lost so much already, most places won't have power for a week or two, drinkable water is scarce, food has become very low and so much more. Its absolutely heart breaking.

How many haven't you visited a few of us local Nutters, Like Andrew Webb, Richie, George & Jane, Norm Sieberling or gone to see Hamilton Island or the many other amazing spots of the region.

It can all grow back and we can all rebuild, but I have started this GoFund Me Page to help the greater community of the Whitsundays.

If you can please all just dig a little in your pockets it would be greatly appreciated. Even if its $5. Cant think of how many times iv been to McDonalds just for $5 meal...

Many Thanks Guys!

Shane

Bloody awful isnt it. We are just getting the tail end of it here now. 200 mm of rain and the wind is nearly taking the roof off. I can't imagine how horrible it was copping the full force of it.

The Palmtalk family all dug deep for me when I got flooded out in 2011, I know I am going to sling a few $s in to help out and think most of the others will too.

I have chipped in a couple of $$$ as I was only in this region 8 months ago and we were there specifically for it's palmy beauty which no doubt has just been wiped out!

The names mentioned by Shane in his first post have all featured on pt many times before with many pics posted from their respective great palm gardens. @Richie and @Tropicgardener are regular contributors to this forum and were / are in ground zero of this massive cyclone.

Best of luck to all those in the affected area but particularly the palmtalk folks

I sent a bit of $$ too.  Here in FL, we understand the devastation of tropical storms.  Exchange rate is interesting at the moment.  AU$50 was billed at US$38.xx.  When I was there in 2011, the exchange rate was $AU1.00 to US$1.05.

Land O Lakes FL, a suburb on the North Side of Tampa, FL

Summers are great, 90f/32c in the day & 70f/21c at night with plentiful rain & sun

Winters are subtropical with occasional frosts and freezes. Tropical cyclones happen.

We have a few Royal palms in the warm microclimates but Coconuts freeze.

I am a Kayaker, Hiker, Bicyclist, and amateur Photographer that loves the outdoors.

As I wrote in the previous thread, it reminds me the day after tsunami, I am so sad, so sorry.

Best of luck to all those in the affected area but particularly the palmtalk folks.  Yes particularly to Palmtalk members since we belong to this huge family.

Hi Shane,

Hard to believe how bad  it was there.  It is now causing record floods 2000 klm further south. Biggest ever weather event.

I will be there in July and August, hopefully tourists will come back asap when able, to help the local economy get re started.

Glad you are OK

Regards

Colin

You are making a great effort Shane and I and the others in the Whitsundays really appreciate it.......... I am doing much better than many here. I have water tanks and a generator and beer :D ....... Many others have been displaced due to damaged or destroyed homes. Almost a week later still no power in the Proserpine and Airlie Beach areas and no water or sewerage.... The military (Army and Navy) have arrived and are doing a great job supporting the emergency services and energy providers......... This has no doubt been one of the most devastating tropical cyclones to hit Queensland in living memory.
