My question is for scale is what's the quickest, easiest way to remove them without defoliating the whole plant? Systemic pesticides safe? ideas?

I've read good things about coffee grounds for scale.  I dump mine in my potted plants occasionally.

Used coffee grounds around the stem work systemically. You could also spray the foliage with diluted coffee to jumpstart the process. I've also treated severe scale with a solution of Ivory or castile soap and water. Gently apply soapy water with a soft cloth. Don't rub it in, just dab it on. Treat the stems and undersides of leaves as well.
