Dypsis saintluciei kinda loosey goosey-eye

Yesterday my big Dypsis saintluciei was leaning like that tower pin Pisa.

Not good. It felt loose in the ground. I suspect root rot from the 20" of rain I have had so far.

That's a bummer Dave.  Did you end up staking it?

I propped it up with an old push-broom.

This really looks quite bad, though I'm accepting shots of recovery karma . . . . :)

My small one in the ground tipped over on Friday. This was after it had survived some really nasty Santa Ana winds over the past several months. So I'm sure you're right Dave that the amount of rain had something to do with it. Fingers crossed!

I had one on a hillside rot out Dave, although yours shouldn't have that issue being on flat terrain & obviously growing well for some time. But as you know, they like to dry out now & again. Best of luck with it.

I have multiple Brahea doing this at the minute.  Hoping it is just because of sodden ground?

Maybe pull away some of the mulch and dirt from the trunk.....after staking of course.

Just might let some evaporation occur to help out.

Here's hoping for the best Dave.

They say mulch directly against the trunks in continuous wet weather is detrimental to palms and trees.

I hope it's just a matter of loose soil due to the rain.

Dave, This seems to be somewhat typical for this palm, to not be well rooting in the ground when young.  I had the same problem with mine and I heard others have also.  Since my soil is pourous I ended up adding a little more top soil around the base and staked and tied it and even placed a couple big rocks against the trunk to help out.  Left it like that for well over a year and I didn't remove the metal stake until it felt well rooted.  That worked for me anyway.  Here it is now.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Dave, I had this happen to mine 2 yrs ago and it did not recover. It has 12' tall with over 15 rings over the roof of my garage. I think the wind caused mine to lean. I'm still bummed its gone :(

steak it and hope for the best

Two of the three I planted are leaning but seem to be doing fine. I think this is just a habit of this species as they can take a ton of rain (we had 220 inches this year).

These are such awesome palms, size and scale are nice for the garden. Mine also were 'wobbly' when young and like Al, had to put a few rocks at the base

to keep them upright. By the way Al, yours looks perfect.

I'm sure the recent rains in Calif. have a lot to do with the instability since it's so dry most of the time and the roots have adapted to those conditions. Of course, just

speculation on my part.

Lots of rain here in Hilo and the D. saintelucei in the garden thrive on the moisture. In 2016 upslope from Hilo we measured 190" of precipitation. That's the most we've ever had since moving here in 2009.
