Cold Hardy Hybrids

I've never been a big fan of hybrid palms, they just make me think of Frankenpalm, freaks of nature. However, I've been knocked out by some of the pics of hybrids on PT.  I'm old, my question is, what hybrid does PT think would be the fastest grower in coastal 9b Texas, very hot and humid with two months of ridiculous cold, 32f average, but occasional lows into the mid twenties.  I intend to live forever. So far, so good.

I'd give the Jubaea x Syagrus a shot. Some people have had success with it in Florida, so it may do alright in Texas.

JxS or BxP.  Regular mules great but much, much slower than both of the aforementioned.

In a gulf coast climate, would BxS (mule) really be slower than BxP or JxS?

From what I've seen on PalmTalk, Gary Levine's (@Gtlevine) JxQ (JxS) is the fastest growing coccoid hybrid on earth.

There was a guy from the Houston area who posted some images of standard mule palms (BxQ) showing the growth rate in his front yard of several on each side of his entry way for the last couple years, and the rate of growth was very impressive. Unfortunately I can't recall his name, but his last posting was only a few months ago.

Who can forget the impressive growth of Dick Douglas (@PalmGuyWC) BxPJc (Butia (mutt) X Parajubaea cocoides)?

Thanks for the info.  The only nursery I've found in Houston that sells mules gets $650 for a 45 gallon.  I actually drove out to see them (an hour and a half from my place), but it started raining and the sales people were busy selling Christmas trees so I got pissed and left.  Does the price sound remotely reasonable?

Any opinions on which is more attractive between mules and Jubea X Syagrus?  I had never seen a hybrid IRL until I went to the San Antonio river walk a few months ago, I was really impressed.  I think they were mules but I can't ID them.  Thanks again.

How fast is B X J X S compared to the mule?

About the same. I have 5 or six in 10-15g pots. I wont need all of them so if you are interested i'd let one go to a fellow texan.

Patric is your man for both JxS and BxP.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose,  but after looking at lots of pics on the web, I 100% agree with you.  I could use 2-3 either J X S or B X J X S.  I'm going to send you a PM.

Patric has neither JxS nor SxJ, at the moment...

That's a shame!  I think I did hear that from someone else, as well.
