palms`n powerlines

Hello everyone,

while driving around I am loving to look at palms here and there and sometimes

I am wondering what`s going to happen to those ones growing under our countless powerlines...

Many palms are not in close range of the power lines but a few ones are and there is a particular

Satakentia I became more and more interested in since it became clear that its crown would get

really close to the lines.

Well, since checking the palm`s situation regularly I have to confess that I saw the day coming when

that tree would have been chopped down or dramatically pruned, but what I recognized this morning -

while driving by - stunned me for a moment.

..and a more closer look -

Wow - not the palm was pruned or removed, no, the measures were instead taken on the cables with a certain layer of isolation in favour of the palm`s leaves!

So, there must be someone in charge thinking ahead - that the palm will outgrow the cables one day - and, and... he or she might be palm nut, too. :D

Ok, I thought I just wanted to share this one with you as an example of a better/happier end than usual... (when it comes to this topic)

best regards

palmfriend

That's awesome! In California they just cut anything growing around power lines. Understandably even if insulated some palms could cause problems when trimming is needed or even a heavy enough leaf falling on the lines. In this case I'm sure those lines will be fine and the palm will continue to look great. Beautiful Satakentia by the way.

Well, not always.

Below is an exception, my old house in Highland, just north of what used to be Norton AFB.

I planted them all.

Looks like the insulation is covering fiber lines. Power is at the top & once the tree reaches those I would bet the tree comes down.

Low voltage/ data is below.

I can't see them covering the high voltage on top because the utility actually sizes and runs the conductor based on it being "free air", that is, nothing around the metal conductor. The air dissapates heat and allows for a much larger current capacity vs. if you were to have it insulated. The heat that is generated by the insulation lowers the capacity of the conductor it protects. The utility will not want to create a hot spot or potential safety issue, or lower it's ability to transmit full power (= $$$) to its customers.

Dave- that's a lot of prime palm real estate covered up by concrete!

Oakley, California

55 Miles E-NE of San Francisco, CA

Solid zone 9, I can expect at least one night in the mid to low twenties every year.

Hot, dry summers. Cold, wet winters.

I didn't do that. That was long after I sold back in 1989.

At least they left the palms!
