I am unable to determine the size of the bromeliad from the photo. It could possibly be A. distichantha.  I am growing it in Austin  it has proved very hardy. Survived a low of 17f and 72hrs below freezing with little damage  it is dry tough and a fairly aggressive grower.  It is also covered with mean teeth and difficult to control. Very nice blooms though.

Clay, A. distichantha has a more upright and tighter form. I agree with you on all your observations about it's spines and tendency to wander. I'm basing my guess on the size of the fallen leaves surrounding it.

I picked up a few Bromeliads at a roadside nursery recently without names. I have searched for the names without luck and hope someone here may know.

1) This Neo has a 37" leaf spread with 4.5" leaves.
