Royal Palms @ South Coast Plaza

Was doing some retail therapy at South Coast Plaza a few days ago and I noticed that about one-third of the Royal Palms along Bear St. are having new fronds that are a brilliant yellow.  I was there a month or six weeks ago and didn't notice this or anything else out of the ordinary about them.

Was wondering if any of you Royal Palm folks could suggest why this is happening.  Is it nutrient deficiency?  Is it the cold late fall weather we've being having?  Could it be some kind of disease or virus?

Anyway, I have always treasured this stand of Royal Palms and I hope they will be okay.

I can't answer your question definitively, but a lot of my Syagrus do this when weather gets cooler.

Don't worry, it is common in cooler months. In a few weeks, the new leaves will be green.

In this moment my Roystonea is opening a new leave and it has the same yellow color.

Sorry for the poor photo, but in this moment i don't have day light.

My Wodveitchia does the same thing on occasion during cool weather. Kinda scary the first time you see it though.

There's a guy who has a Flickr album dedicated to the Palms of South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, California. In the album he has numerous photos of several locations in and around the mall with absolutely outstanding looking Royal Palms (easily the best I've seen in Southern California) as well as photos of many of the more exotic palms they have growing there. Here's the link:

@Mahalo2 Nice find on the flicker acc I use to go to that mall all the time and i cant say i ever really noticed all those palms. The Royals , Bizzies and Caryotas always caught my eye.

Jeez, I remember going there when it first opened. There sure weren't any Royals there then.
