Hi guys,

I'm also new to the palm community, so hello all.

I'm in search of the infamous Dypsis black stem from Vakona forest lodge in Madagascar, if anyone has knowledge of where I can source this palm or seeds, here down under or OS,would be much appreciated.

I see that in this weeks blog on Jungle Music Phil has some small ones for sale but don't know if he ships internationally.

A friend of mine bought one from Jungle Music.  It was a 4" liner.

According to my memory, Phil said that the plants were collected by Len Geiger, but that they were from a different plant than the one in your pictures - I remember asking him specifically about whether or not they came from the lodge.

Those plants came from me. I collected the seed off the ground from under an old "Black Stem" in the Mantadia National Park. Not from the Lodge. I was there in October so nothing was in seed, so I didn't find much viable seed left on the ground. Most was already rotted.

Len, you don't happen to have a picture of the likely mother plant, do you?  Just interested given I picked up two from Phil.

Thank for the tip Scott!  I was able to pick up one of these too.  They sure don't last long......Interested to see a pic of the mother, since they are not from the lodge.

While not the exact tree, this is what they looked like in habitat in Mantadia National Park.

Thanks for the pic and perspective, Len!  I hope I can raise these to semi-maturity!

Should be fine if you can grow the more common yellow crownshaft Baronii. I think there was a false narrative about these being more difficult here in SoCal because most the people that bought the large plants from Rancho Soledad watched them die (me included). Those plants came from Hawaii and were so root bound there was hardly any soil at all. Bad start for planting here. I think that was the issue more than the plants or growers themselves. The one I grew from a seedling from RarePalmSeed is in the ground and doing great. They just are not fast palms. Need time to root.

Great - I have had good success with baronii over several years, so fingers crossed!
