Trithrinax acanthacoma/brasiliensis before and after

Recommended Posts

I'd like to join my Trithrinax acanthacoma/brasiliensis in wishing you all a merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, happy new year, and all the rest, with a note about how far it's come.

The two pictures far below were taken in June of 2008. The two above were taken today. The palm's overall height is about 10 feet. It's a bit crowded by its neighbors, but it will eventually tower about 40 feet.

Why are most cold hardy palms painfully slow?  I received this as a 1g from Dick Douglas in 2007 and planted it in Aug 2009.  Doesn't seem to like our cold and foggy winters very much.  Has bud rot just about every spring except for this spring.  Hopefully it has outgrown that stage.

Thanks to all who PM'd to get free seed. If you want some . . .

This is a seriously underappreciated species. Such a nice, dark, rich green, silver on the back. Yes, there are spines, but they're not lethal and can be removed if you want.

Again, they will take some serious cold.

Here is my largest small one.  It is about 5 years old from seed.  It has started growing much faster since being planted in ground.  It survived a lot of neglect while potted even tolerating the soil to dry out near completely on a regular basis.

Here is my anthacoma.  About 6' of beefy trunk. The wind the last few weeks did a real number on it though.  Note that it saw two consecutive nights of 18 degrees and 44 hours below 30 last week. No spotting on it and today was 80 degrees and sunny.

All photos are Trithrinax acanthocoma , I'll see if I can get a photo Trithrinax brasiliensis ,  that has flexible leaves , non-stinging leaves like acanthocoma.

Correct ; Rigid leaves.

and stinging, since tips are prickly, especially on newer leaves. BtW leaves on my own plant are no longer that rigid, as it grows older.
