Howdyall,

This thread was inspired by the Cyrtostachys hybrid thread, in which Californians all sadly mourned their dead. And went out of their heads. (Bob Dylan eat your heart out!)

Some palms have to have a lot of water, like Archontophoenix, but aren't denizens of the wet. Others should stay wet all the time; I call them Swamp Things. Stand the pots in water, and the roots cluster under the water line to drink up.

Dypsis perrieri was one of those. I got about 20 back in the late 1990s and kept them in tubs of standing water, where they grew well. After they sold, all died. Swamp things marooned outside the swamp.

Raphia is another. I had one that I kept under the drip drip drip of the swamp cooler outflow, and it grew fast. No more swamp no more Raphia.

I'm going to do a medical experiment at my place with some Roystonea oleracea; I'll stand a few pots in water and pray to avoid Zika . . .

Anyone have experiences, thoughts, pictures?

I have recently planted Metroxylon amicarum and Metroxylon warburgii in low lying areas on my property that become very wet during our wet season......... Elaeis guineensis, Arenga australasica, engleri and microcarpum, Ptychosperma macarthurii are also in very boggy spots......... and of course as you mentioned Archontophoenix......... I have planted dozens of them along my creek which blends in with the wild populations nearby......... I am trialing many others in similar situations that will survive the bog !!!

Marojejya darianii.......mine gets watered twice daily, using 1/4 inch tubing and Spot Spitters, small stake sprayers made for pot watering.  It also gets all of my laundry water, which keeps the surrounding area fairly damp year round.

Let any of that go haywire and watch the leaves start to brown on the edges in 10 days or so.......VERY unforgiving.

Not for a place with a pronounced dry season, but there's nothing like a good challenge, eh?
