The sliver undersides look great. Well done! I'm wondering if the princeps would be fine in my 8b PNW climate?

Cheers, Barrie.

Might be worth a try, though I understand they are native to a region with more summer heat than other Tracy species.

These are sometime available from palm enthusiasts here, but never at garden centers. I'll have to look out for one to buy.

Cheers, Barrie.

They do love the really warm weather...

I have heard they are hardy to around 12F

around this size, this one has seen that briefly,

probably less tolerant of cold and moisture together than

Fortunei.

They love San Francisco, where it's hardly ever hot (or below freezing).

They are totally hardy to z8, just really slow growing here. I have two in the ground but neither is in full sun. Mine have seen 15F with no protection with no damage. So 8b will be no problem for them. I got mine in Cali 8 years ago. They like good drainage which I think you have.

My two year old babies are finally starting to speed up.  They are white on both top and bottom of the frond, which is fantastic as that is the variety that I really wanted to grow.

I've been to Jim's house and saw his amazing garden up close. That palm is much cooler than pictures show even. I probably took more pictures of that specifically than anything else in his garden.

I can really appreciate the work that Jim goes through to protect his palm and cactus collection. Strings of extension cords, thermocubes(and extras in case of one failing) Not to mention the protection itself, the plastic, fencing etc.  Then, all winter watching the electric cost increase.

The dedication is worth it though when so many people are shocked to see palm trees in our part of the country and look with admiration and ask endless questions.

It's fun...

Hate to tell you this but nothing is covered....there are many reasons but

I can not get anything but a month to month lease here and I am tired

of my landlord damaging, stepping on plants etc.....and basically investing

all the time and money in something that is not mine.

SO

If everything goes right,I will be moving and if anything survives

(thinking Cacti here)it can make the trip to a new yard.

Otherwise I will start over somewhere new, with small palms

so I can enjoy them for a while again before they get big.

So long for now....................

Heres an update.

I did go out yesterday and dig up my Takil and

ahem.......the Princeps,I have to say the leaves

looked fine and the spear was solid after 12F.

Very surprising!

I cant imagine that it will not pull as I did not

get very many roots but just by luck I guess,

it had a bunch of new roots coming out of the

base that were very thick, this may allow it

to root quickly and not lose to much mass....

we'll see.

I did dig up my D.Antarctica too...whether that survives or

not I don't know but it did see temps as low as 14F and

a few days with high temps in the 20s,if it survives that

would be EXTREMELY impressive!

Oh man.   So sorry to hear this Jim.  All of that hard work!!!!.   I guess save what you can.  Maybe now is in an opportunity for you to look into moving to a warmer, more palm friendly climate?  Damn. I don't know what else to say here accept that I'm sorry you have to go through this.   :(

Haha

I was leaving everything go,so any

thing that survives is a bonus and somethiong

I don't have to buy again...hopefully I can move

soon and start over in a different layout.

I am looking forward to it,this is a rental and

I am done worrying about the plants here.

It will be amazing to have my own place,we'll see what happens.

When I covered the Washy(apparently for fun because I don't think

I would move it)the spear was brownish and not looking good,

it also had ice frozen around the spear and petiole bases!

it saw 12F but this is a very thick trunk so we shall see-

kinda more of an experiment in a way.

Your Low on Saturday is -10F and your HIGH on Sunday is 0F.  If these aren't covered they will be 100% dead.

I had the exact same thought, thats why I covered them...

but what really motivated me was seeing how well the Waggie

took 14F and looked perfect and the Princeps @12F,watching them

battle it out in the cold like that was impressive!

I had lend assistance lol

The Washy was growing last year while it was covered,it will

be interesting to see if the spear lifts up after being cemented

in place with a coating of ice! Today will be day 2 of

it being thawed out,it will either stink like cabbage in

there(dead palm) or the spear will grow.....

If it comes back,I may just dig it out anyway!
