I was in La Jolla, CA yesterday and I happened upon a tree? which I have never seen before.

Can anyone tell me what it is?

Looks like Dracaena draco?

From online pictures of the Dracaena draco, this specimen appears to be quite different.

I saw this very tree the last time I was in La Jolla. It's definitely a dragon tree, though I suppose it could be different species than the famous one from the Canary Islands.

A rip roarin' Dracena draco.

If you're in the mood for a monster, check out the one at the Hotel Del Coronado. It was planted in the 1880s.

Here are two of mine around 9 years old from seed.  One plant has a much thicker trunk with straight/upright leaves and another has a thin truck with droopy leaves.

You can see the biggest one I owned in the red container. I had to leave it behind when I sold my house in CA. There are also two small ones in the ground that survived temps down to 25F.

And here is a different species in habitat on Socotra (not my photo)

Those are from an Island off the Coast of Yemen, near Saudi Arabia. Amazing convergence, eh? They look very much like the ones in the Canary Islands, though they're thousands of miles away.

Yep. Socotra is a fragment of Gondwana, I believe. I'm pretty sure dragon trees are restricted to pieces of Gondwana. I'll have to Google it to be sure :-)

It looks like they're found in a few places outside of Gondwana's remnants. Dracaena americana is in Central America, but I can't find any trustworthy photos.

I wish the Socotran Dracaena cinnabari were available here in California.  I would love to get some seeds from them.

Do any American botanical collections have one? I bet it's more frost sensitive than the Canary Island species.

You can get Cinnabari off eBay right now. Cinnabari is much slower than Draco. A real prize is Serrulata. Also slow.

How much would a larger specimen (4+ branches and at least 6' tall) cost in the nursery trade?

Nope, that is Draco for sure. Look at the leaves. Many times in past, Draco was mislabeled as Cinnabari. Cinnabari is actually rare in cultivation.

Agreed. This is probably the nicest D. draco in SoFla.
