Ocotillo - Fouquieria splendens

The Silent Seed

Recommended Posts

Don't want to start seeds - looking for one or ten, depending on cost.

Prefer nice sized gallons, or smaller. Bigger, if not bank-breaking.

Good luck, i know of nowhere to find these. The larger one i have is struggling with out humidity here and i dont think its long for this world.

Arid Lands in AZ currently carries one gallon F splendens for 15 bucks. They also carry a number of other ocotillo species. I do business with them from time to time - quite a bit of late - and have found their plant quality to be very good and service and selection excellent.

Somewhat surprised to read that someone would consider this a hard plant to find online. They are common garden center offerings in parts of the southwestern US.

Thank you! I, too, do business with them - I was hoping to find something a bit larger than what they are offering - and you're right - they shouldn't be this hard to find.

Thanks!

Anything bigger than what Aridlands offers, ie: say seed- grown 3+gal, might be harder to locate for less than 30/40 bucks each.  Have seen smallish specimens in 4? Inch for about 5 dollars from a cactus specialty nursery here in Chandler.

Bigger specimens I see around town can be questionable since they are field grown and don't always survive being cut/dug, or, has been my observation. I always stress purchasing seed grown specimens to customers because they typically will establish much better, even if you are starting with smaller sized plants at first.  Planning on trying some larger cuttings of a big specimen in the neighborhood next spring.

Silas,

Thank you for your input - I've sent you a PM. Good to know that the cut / dug ones are not so easily transplanted.

I bit the bullet and purchased seed.  They are now in pots so hopefully I will have a few to sell locally instead of the bare root ones that show up from Arizona every year.
