Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Zeeth, I have to ask if you surf.  It sounds like the way surfer's talk about how big waves are...waist high, chest high, DOH (double overhead), etc.  The problem already identified, is the size of your subject.  At one of my regular surfspots, we add the clarification as to who's HH (head high) it would be.

Btw. There are laser guided equipments available today more used by building contractors.that might help in giving exact hight of palms.

That equipment is as small as a hand held tourch light.and has a digital read out.as seen in a tong tester gadget.  it works on the principle of ultrasound as in radar,I think.

There's no real good surfing on this coast, but my fiancee's dad tried taking me once when we were visiting them in Brevard. I swallowed a lot of saltwater that day.

I like that idea, Kris. I think my mom actually has a laser measure, but I've never thought of using it on palms before!

Yes, hypsometers, which use ultrasounds to make measurements, are used in forestry field. They're quite expensive though (I've used one which costs more than 1000€)
