Unusual Ground Orchid (?) from Sarawak, Borneo

Recommended Posts

Found only 2-3 of these rare plants growing in all my travels throughout Sarawak. Has anyone seen it as well, or has it, knows it's botanical name?. Would love to know. Thank you.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Jeff:

It looks like it might be a Collabium sp

Only one or two spp of these occasionally find their way into jewel orchid specialist collections on our side. I imagine they are more commonly cultivated in Thai and Javan collections.

Lovely plant.

Jeff, you are a Facebooker now. Add this question to one of the Orchid groups. Guarantee someone will ID it quickly there.

Were the leaves rigid ? They resemble Aspidistra sp.

I agree!

If it didn't have the flower stalk I would have mistaken this for an Aspidistra!

Thank you all for the comments. So were still unsure, I guess. When standing there staring at it, all I could think about that if I could, I would love to put this in tissue culture. It was extremely nice.

That would be an awesome terrestrial orchid for cultivation with that attractive foliage.

Jeff, I just saw your topic today! I certainly agree with the identification as I cheated and got it from a poster at the airport in Borneo. I read online that P. acuminata is now called P. plicata.

I certainly wish your photo uploading would cooperate so we could see more of your excellent photos. Maybe some palm talker who is attending your sale could troubleshoot after they have bought (or helped sell to others ) your entire inventory?
