OK I planted my new fortunei in well drained soil 2 days ago and just started applying palmbooster a hormone stimulant and will stop at November.

Now that I am applying that every few days upto November, how long do you think it will take for that palm to establish, will it establish before winter or before next spring.

I would cease fertilization this late in the year, and just let it find its feet.  Given your location, I'm thinking you have pretty good soil, given how rapidly things rot down there.

It won't really root in until next growth season.

If you want to keep your plants root systems awake a bit longer then I would suggest chelated iron.

otherwise I would just not give your palm anymore supplements until next spring.

cheers!

The other thing you could do is water them with warm water to keep the ground temperature up a little longer. You don't say if they were pot grown or field dug.:greenthumb:

Well guys first palmbooster is a root hormone stimulant and not a fertiliser it helps establish palms in half the time than it normally would.i am not sure if it's field dug or pot grown but it's the biggest fortunei I seen for 40cm trunk the leaves are huge.next won't keeping it awake with chelated iron confuse and damage it's growing cycle.

Now I am thinking of getting well rotted manure and need to ask is that stuff any Good for t fortunei and how do you apply it as I don't want to dig up my palm.

I got told to stop using palmbooster at beginning of November that's when growing season officially ends

Trachys are pretty bullet proof throughout the UK. I'd only use palm booster every other week up to the end of September maybe start of October.

As for well rotted manure, just put a 6" layer on top of the root zone, which is pretty much to where the fronds overhang there's no need to dig it in ....just don't pile up to the trunk. If the winter looks like going down to minus stupid Celcius.....which doesn't look on the cards.....a bit more mulch and a bit of horticultural fleece over the top, otherwise don't molly coddle it too much

Well, let's see this thing if it is so big then!  No pic = didn't happen.

Here's a big one I saw in Banbury, UK (Midlands) last year - sorry my daughter and I are in the way!

I wouldn't fuss too much over these with "palm boosters" etc. They're pretty straight forward in England from what I've learned. Flounder has good info for you.

Cheers, Barrie.

Josh, I'm not sure there is any point putting muck round your  Tracky  at this time of year, the goodness will just leach out over winter and be gone by the time your palm starts again in spring. Put it on in the spring. If you want to mulch for protection cover with a thick layer of leaves over winter.:greenthumb:

  • 3 weeks later...

Best to fertilise that Trachycarpus fortunei in spring, not now as its stops growing anyway in autumn. When just planted only give it a good soake.
