Plants from nuts, food seeds etc

I love growing things from seed but I like to try unusual things and I was wondering how many have tried to grow say a brazil nut, or even if its possible indoors?

I tried a mango years ago but I allowed it to dry-had it in too warm an environment,  and the seeds are HUGE! Ive also tried papaya from seed. I got seedlings but they damped off-they need high humidity.

Coffee bean anyone? If you can find one that isnt roasted it grows into a glossy leaved houseplant.

I got some ginger root to sprout once but I was living in a tiny flat-it couldnt stay.

Ive also grown a peanut and got it to flower, boy that plant grew quick-had to repot it twice in the year I kept it! I'd definitely try that again!

Here's that peanut in flower

Avocados, Mango, Pomelo tree, Blood Oranges, Meyers Lemon, Papaya, Pineapples, Cherimoya, Ginger, Carrot....

Most of these are still alive!  Though nothing has yet flowered or fruited.

Thank you, yes I removed the seed from the fibrous endocarp and immediately placed it on a zippy bag with a moist paper towel. The seeds are Recalcitrant which means they cannot survive drying out and must be planted immediately.

I've done a few of those, also dates and some unusual sweet peppers which sprouted despite being refrigerated when I bought them.

Last year a sprout a few papaya seeds and it was very easy.

My small Papaya trees was waiting in a pots and this year i planted one in the ground.

They are fast growers and the only one planted in the ground is two meters tall and flowering from June.

I grew lots of edibles and non palm ornamentals in pots in a greenhouse in VA for many years before heading to Puerto Rico. Many things you can grow from grocery store seeds (and roots) as you have suggested and then later plant them in the tropics or just continue to enjoy them in pots.

If there are any seed requests I can try to help.

Does a 25 ft Ruby red grapefruit from seed count?

:greenthumb: Impressive! How are the Fruit?.. you notice any taste difference compared to fruit off a grafted tree?

Everyone that tries them says they are better than anything they have ever bought at the store. Grapefruit do come true from seed as do most citrus.

I was curious about that, since Grapefruit is a hybrid.

I have a few grapefruit seedlings here , parent tree gives fruit with a few less seeds than the seedlings .

Know family up at Daintree who would buy 4 bags of Brazil nuts every Xmas and plant them all .

After 20 years or so they finally have a few trees . BUT seems they need a special pollinator .

Many commercial plantations of Brazil nuts have not been very viable .
