I really want one, just not sure if they will do well in my area. Really an amazing plant.

I think you could grow the ficus d.

Some have been growing for many years in Corona with much success.

Maybe provide some canopy to help.

I agree with Jim. Try one in filtered sun. When grown in filtered light, they stand more upright like a tree as opposed to a ground hugging bush when in full blazing sun. This one is in my back yard has light canopy overhead:

It's tougher to acquire one than to grow one. It should be fine in Escondido, unless you're in a valley that gets hard frost. They like lots of water though. Don't let the soil dry out.

Here's one I have in neighboring San Marcos. Sometimes it throws nice red/bronze leaves.

Yes, copious amounts. The leaves are leathery and this white liquid will drip with even a smallest damage to any part of the leaf.
