maybe your caudex sneezed?  :D

No, but my little one is flushing right now.... looks like about 11 new leaves unless there are some wrapped up in the middle somewhere.  It will be interesting to watch this one grow and see if it exhibits the same features as the other, larger one I have.

Last Monday 4/30/2018 the larger of the two.  I tried counting leaves on this flush when it was early in the push, but can't remember except that it was significantly more than the smaller one or the number of it's previous flush.  You can see how green the emerging flush is, with the blue color yet to come after these leaflets harden.

Thanks for the pics Tracy. Amazing hybrid for sure. With this last heat wave I am sure it will blue up sooner than later.

This is the smaller one that I had the problems with the mealy bug and scale on the emerging leaflets.  It did ok as a result of my picking them off carefully and using a high pressure spray to blast them off.  Still hardening off, so not showing the blue yet either, but it will.

Given the circumstances it looks great. That flush is just incredible. It looks like twice the amount of leaves compared to the last flush. Plus like u mentioned noticeably longer leaves as well. Definitely some hybrid vigor.

Yes, it definitely has some hybrid vigor at work.  It just finished hardening off a second flush this year.  Again longer and wider leaves, and the leaflet tops are showing a nice blue tint even during the "golden hour" as the sun was setting.  The Encephalartos longifolius off to it's side offers a color balance to compare it to.

On the first day of winter the blue really jumps.  This time the E longifolius is behind the Cycas thouarsii x cupida in the photo.  This has been the plant that keeps on giving... beauty that is!  My Encephalartos lehmanii shot in the same lighting that morning isn't any more blue than the Cycas.

That color is coming out more and more with every flush. It’s nice that we are having such mellow winter. Merry Christmas

So much for mellow winter.  I guess it wasn't overly cold, but definitely wet and cool!  The Cycas thouarsii x cupida seem to have appreciated the extra doses of water this winter.  Both are popping out new flushes.  Hopefully they will be nice and blue, as I can see that some of the white chalkie sunscreen that gives them the blue color has washed off the older flushes with so much rain this winter.

Wow Tracy that thing is a rocket. Your garden seems to have woken up really early this year. I only have a couple cycads flushing at the moment.

That is actually quite surprising to me.  Normally cycads start flushing earlier further inland where temps begin rising in Springtime before the coast experiences any real hot days.  It is primarily a few that flushed or coned late last year that are holding off right now.  While we have not had any hot days, nights are warming up significantly, and we had a few nice spring days before the recent onset of May Gray and am drizzle this week.  I think I have as many cycads flushing as not right now.  Most of the ones which aren't yet flushing, are looking very close to popping within days or a few weeks at most.

It's been 5 1/2 years since I posted the above photo.  The plant has gotten bigger as you can see.  A friend was over and we (he did all the work) just pulled a pup off mama that is about the same size as the original plant.  This is a fast growing Cycas, probably driven by hybrid vigor.  Anyone else that got one of these want to show what theirs look like today?

Looks like a ton of pups on that thing!!!  Definitely has a thourasii look, especially in the earlier pics.

Unfortunately most of the blue color is on the top of the leaflets, so hard to see now as one mostly sees the undersides of the leaflets as tall as it is.  It tends to hold leaves more upright than my C thouarsii with the exception of the pups which are growing angled out from the base.  The female is a pupping machine, the pup we pulled off had a little subterranean pup of about 1" attached to it that had not yet even pushed a flush.  The male has pupped as well, but not as many as the female.  Not exactly a good sample to extrapolate off, as I have some straight C thouarsii which pup like mad and others that only have a couple that are of similar size.

Since this was about to flush a bunch of leaves on both the main caudex and the pups, I decided to clean it up a little by removing some of the older leaves and give the new ones pushing up room.  The largest pup is bigger than when this went from pot into the ground.  The main caudex shows how fast this hybrid is in 4 years time since I took the picture above.

I wanted to share this cool looking and vigorous growing hybrid Cycas.  I've not seen Cycas cupida available here in Southern California, so can't compare my hybrid to that parent, but I do have several Cycas thouarsii, so have a good sense of what they should look like and how they perform over time.  Cycas thouarsii x cupida has an attractive upward V shape in the way that the leaflets are held as opposed to the normally flatter or sometimes even a little droopy ends to the leaflets on some C thouarsii.  The color of the hybrid is also a bonus, being more bluish than the greens of its mother plant.  Final observation on my hybrid is that the leaflets seem narrower when compared to the leaflets of the mother plant.  The previous flush began in January, and the new flush is about to unfurl as you can see.  Bottom line, its a hybrid I would recommend.20160719-104A3962.thumb.jpg.6634170246e120160719-104A3963.thumb.jpg.db0381195277

I removed the largest pup and gave it to a friend off the female plant.  Still a bunch more pups on it as it pushes flushes on both pups and main caudex.  I removed many of the lower leaves off this one as well, so that the new ones pushing wouldn't end up contorted as they hit the leaves above.  I had a photo bomber in this one come running through.
