The PSSC’s July 16, 2016 Meeting

The Palm Society of Southern California will have its July, 2016  meeting at two gardens in South Orange County, in Trabuco Canyon and Mission Viejo.

The first stop will be at the home and garden of Gary Siegel (nomme de PalmTalk "Cagary"), at 21046 Briarwood Lane, Trabuco Canyon, CA 92679. The second phase will be at the home and garden of Brett and Sheryl Portwood ("Brett in Mission Viego"), at 25822 Chrisanta Drive, Mission Viejo, CA 92691.

Gary Siegel has built a unique garden which includes palms, other tropical s and countless rare fruit trees.  Gary purchased his pie-shaped lot before this home was even built, in Trabuco Canyon, which is in south orange county just outside of Coto De Caza.  Winters stay pretty warm in this area and you will be able to see plants rarely seen growing this well such as a perfect mature spindle palm, Hyophorbe verschaffeltii! Other goodies include a 30ft tall Foxy Lady hybrid, a triple trunking Chamberonyia, and a Traveler’s palm (Ravenala madgascarensis) with 15 feet of trunk!  Members (even those not on the Board) are welcome to attend the PSSC Board meeting.

When Brett and Sheryl Portwood purchased their Mission Viejo property in December 1999, the yard was a mess of partially dead Oleanders and thick Juniper hedges. The Portwoods cleaned up the yard and planted a few palm trees: the usual King, Queen, and pigmy date palms. Eventually, Brett started to learn more about the hobby from the www.palmtalk.org forums and began collecting Cycads as well as some more unusual palms. By 2002, he was coming down with palm fever, planting and trying to grow way more species of palms.  For a while he killed as many as he planted, because of the difficulties of growing marginal palms in clay soil. Layers and layers of mulch helped the soil in the long run. In 2006, the Portwoods completely re-designed their backyard and created different microclimates around the pool/spa/grotto area, and shortly thereafter planted a Bottle palm (Hyophorbe langencaulis) which became established.  By this time, the Portwoods also had overhead canopy, which provided a little more protection for marginal plants. The Portwoods love the Caryotas, Dypsis, and Syagrus species, and their towering - huge! - Roystonea. They also planted more understory plants, such as Chamaedoreas, Chuniophoenix, various ferns and are experimenting with Kerriodoxa and Pinangas.  Sheryl Portwood is interested with succulents, which she planted in and among the palms and they provide some nice contrast. The Portwoods enjoy their little piece of paradise and enjoy supporting the IPS and PSSC, and look forward to sharing our garden on July 16.

Have there been meetings at these yards previously?

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

Neither of these yards have been toured by the PSSC previously.  I have however visited both, which are very different, but a great compliment to one another.  Both fantastic yards!.  Here are a few shots of the first yard.
