Nice, and isn’t it flowering now? How tall is the stem?

Yea it's pushing out another 2 flower stems now, and another leaf!  It's doing well considering its in shade, in the hall and gets forgotten!

From base to tip it's about 16-18 inches tall.

Here's the whole thing. Grown from a seed back in 2008-09

You can see two flower spikes and a new leaf just emerging. Should I remove the old leaf bases at the bottom?

I would remove the dried leaf sheaths. Ch metallica has a nice green stem. – But another question: Why don’t you grow Ch tuerckheimii? They are most suited to a postage stamp sized garden:

I can not grow them in my garden,  winter would kill them. Plus I am not allowed to plant trees in this garden. I would have it as a houseplant tho like C.metallica

Very pretty C. metallica. Cham tuercks might be worth a try if you have the funds. They are highly prone to spider mites so keep a good miticide on hand.

I'd like to be under the sea in an octopus' garden in the shade.

These three blooming Ch. metallica had also nice slender green stems.  And you can see the remnants of the old inflorescences on the stems, too.

So do male and female plants have different leaf forms?

Nono, that’s not a matter of sex: Both parents were pinnate. Ch. metallica can have bifide leaves, pinnate laves, or a mix of both, regardless of their sex.

Notice at the bottom it says about the flowers, pale or greenish. They're actually orange!

No, not the flowers but the rachis. The flowers are »(dull purplish brown in bud,) bright orange at anthesis«.

When mine flowers the rachis is unbranched.  Maybe because it's still quite young.

Hmm. Could be. Are there ultra close up photos of individual flowers? Or even drawings. I'm gonna get some macro shots of mine when they open.
