Hydriastele costata

doranakandawatta

Recommended Posts

Thanks to Daryl's earlier post, I found photo of this species which seems to be of little interest here on Palmtalk.

post-42-0-01597700-1349047040.thumb.jpg.

I wish I could get seeds or seedlings and try to grow Hydriastele costata in Doranakanda gardens, with the other Hydriasteles species I try.

Do other Palmtalkers have experience with Hydriastele costata ? any pics? any comments?

I love the Hydriastale palms, H. costata kind of reminds me of Wallaceodoxa.   I hope you can find some seeds, good luck!

Seed is rarely but sometimes available from people who live in Cairns, NQ. There are mature specimens in a couple of plantings though getting anyone to post seed is difficult. It's a beauty. GBB in Singapore have big specimens behind HQ office, so maybe I can organise seed in the future but don't hold your breathe too long. I have 1 beautiful potted specimen doing really well.

One of my favourite palms, I don't know why more people don't grow it. I have a couple of small seedlings and a number of seeds on the way. There are a couple of spots in my garden which are very empty at the moment because they are waiting for my H Costata to grow to a size where they can be planted.

Phillipe,

I suspect the availability problem may be related to seed viability. I ordered several batches of the tiny seeds with no luck until I got two sprouts out of a group of 20 sowed in April 2007. Most of the others seeds seemed to have dried up. The two seedlings didn't look very healthy so I got them in the ground in May 2011. Here they are today, with 5-gal orange bucket for scale. The one on the left has produced several immature attempts at a flower bract, but no seeds yet.

Mike,

Thank you for showing a nice picture.
It seems these Hydriastele grow under full sun, and quite fast, isn't it?

Does it suffer in winter Kris?

No it doesnt. I sowed 100 seed and only 1 grew. I have had it for 10 years. Experiences down to 2-4C each year and is producing 2 leaves each summer season. It's now a beauty in a 400mm pot standing near head height.
