Illawarra rainforests

I was lucky enough to go on a tour of the Illawarra rainforests with Friends of Sydney RBG a few weeks ago. The Illawarra escarpment has a mixture of subtropical and temperate rainforests due to the elevation of the escarpment. The subtropical component could be considered a southerly outlier of the more extensive subtropical rainforests north of the Hunter Valley.

Bangalow palms are native, but do not grow in extensive groves as they do further north.

Lots of reasons to come visit.  I'm finishing my first trip to the Southern Hemisphere in Kerikeri, NZ.  The town has an amazing assortment of tropical cultivated plants, including palms, while the local river has young but thriving native forest.

Some fabulous photos there that bring back memories for me. I spent 7 years stationed at NAS Nowra back in my Navy years.
