Howdyall:

On Monday, I visited an under-appreciated tourist attraction in Los Angeles, the Watts Towers, in South Central Los Angeles.

It's right off the "blue line" public transit system, easy to get to.

They were built for no good reason, by an Italian immigrant who then gave the land they sat on to his neighbor. He wanted to make his mark.

Like so many of us with our gardens? Is the guy a kindred spirit? I think so. Too bad we couldn't get more people like him in the palm society . . . . :)

A recent magazine article featured pictures, but they were taken on a gray day. I went there on a sunny day, and the towers blazed with color. Nutty! But neat!

The towers are part of the California State Park system. No charge to see.

The last time I was there was back in the 1990s, when the 'hood was much tougher than it is now. There's a visitor center, sculptures, and a garden.

There's a fence around the towers, but it's not as intrusive as it looks in these pictures.

Great story of another unique place in L.A.'s urban history.  I can't imagine how many hours it must have taken to complete each tower, decorations and all. And to think about everything that has unfolded below them over time.  Thanks for sharing Dave.

All the times I've been to LA and for some reason never made it to see the Watts Towers yet.  (Haven't made it to lots of things in LA...) Seeing the photos brings to mind the works of Gaudí in Barcelona, Spain, such as Park Guell, and the Sagrada Familia cathedral.  Jeff, you need to get out more.  :winkie:
