Looks like Aechmea castelnavii.  Just a guess from how the rosette and infructescence look.

Pretty sure Ray is correct - Aechmea castelnavii:)

Leilani Estates, 25 mls/40 km south of Hilo, Big Island of Hawai'i. Elevation 880 ft/270 m. Average rainfall 140 inches/3550 mm

Thank you for your ID .Here are a few pictures of some of the germinated seeds, these are the first broms I have grown from seed. I started them on sphagnum moss and transferred them to the sand trays.

That's really intresting. I've never seen sprouted broms before! I wonder how long it will take to form that typical leaf-rosette.

Have the same type of question as Ben.   Been thinking about starting shine bromeliad from seed and wondering how to do it and the time to grow,  etc.   Did the whole orchid think,  crossed,  flashed,  etc.,  but the time to grow drovr me nuts!

Not  well , everything was going along well until I went away for work for a few months and neglect raised its ugly head and got the upper hand. In hindsight I should have mixed some peat or sphagnum moss in with the sand to retain a bit of moisture but was worried about the sprouts damping off. Thank you for your interest.
