Bold move, Matt.  I will soon be removing a mediocre example of Howea belmoreana, after growing it for 13 years.

But that’s nothing compared to this madagascarenis-type that a neighbor had pruned. It had been flowering recently.

Slice and dice. Got to agree, if you have a superior collector palm needing the niche in you garden, good bye common type.

A matter of limited space, land ain't cheap :violin:

Bentinkia Condapanna does not grow well for me either. It melts at the beach here and prefers a little more elevation/cooler temperatures.

There seems to be a ton of people on here that surf as well. Do surf and palms go together? I think so.......

But wait, it gets worse....

I've got these two seriously struggling Bentinkia condopanna that I've replaced them with.  These things have been going downhill in my greenhouse for a while.  I figure I better plant them out and at least give them a proper burial.  I know for a fact that these can't take full sun, so I'll put some shadecloth over them if they even live.  But eventually they'll have to take full blazing afternoon sun.  I'm not sure if this is ever gonna work.  I guess you'll probably see another thread soon with me replanting this spot again.  Someday I'll get it dialed in.

My experience is that Condies won't take the inland blazing sun, unless you water them endlessly.

Yeah those Bentinckia died real quick.  I have two others; one in full shade and one in partial sun.  They're both doing great.

I put two Copernicia hospita in this spot.  They've been in the ground for two years now and they're growing great albiet slowly.  We'll see in about 5 years if they're gonna cut the mustard of meet the saw.

stay tuned.....

Ok, the deed is done.  before and after photos.  Heart of Howea is 'very mild with a faint sweetness'.  Not as tasty as Euterpe, but better than Archontophoenix.  A bit of olive oil and balsamic vinegar helps !  ;)
