Cleaning Rhapidophyllum hystrix seeds

Bigfish

Recommended Posts

Somebody please just kill me.  I've soaked them, then got the wire brush attachment on the drill going on them.  Then soaked them some more, followed by another round with the drill.  I've still got some fruit and/or fiber clinging to some seeds, while other seeds are perfectly clean.  Wishing I had a setup where I could use a pressure washer on them now.  I don't think I can try  the drill with wire brush again, as I've damaged a few seeds during round 2.  I don't want to soak them for much longer either, because I worry about leaving them in water for too long.

Any suggestions?  If it was just a few seeds, I'd just clean them by hand.  But it's many thousands of seeds.  I thought about just drying them thoroughly in their current state, then soaking again for a few days.  Maybe this would help to loosen stuff up a little more.  I think I may have to resort to individually picking out the perfectly clean ones out by hand, which might take days, lol.  I really need one of those concrete mixers.

Whoa!

Good question: I just dumped mine into pots, uncleaned.

Well I haven't tried to clean this quantity before.  Collecting them was a lot more fun, haha!  10 different counties in three states.  I just need better equipment I think.  They don't really have a hard enough shell to keep hitting them with the wire brush drill attachment or I would keep that up.  A wire cage and pressure washer would work, I think, or the mini cement mixer with sand and rocks...but I have neither.

Do they really need to be cleaned?

I mean, they're here after no one cleaned them for millenia of millenia.

I haven't tried this, but it seems like you might be able to loosen the fruit up chemically. How about soaking them in a weak acid, like vinegar?

Well I have considered using that pectinase enzyme, but didn't consider other weak acids.  Right now I'm drying them, then I'll soak them again and see if that loosens the fruit up a bit.  Over half of them are perfectly clean, but it would take forever to separate them from the uncleaned seeds.  May have to bite the bullet and do that anyway.

Are these clean? Are you selling them? Are they the weepy form?

They are mostly clean now.  I actually got down with a knife and scraped the ones with persistent fruit, LOL.  Extremely time-consuming, but I have some beautiful seeds now!

They are not the weeping form.  Neither one of those palms had seeds on them.
