Having an amazing Fall so far here in Nebraska (USA) 5b  Not even a first frost yet! so all potted palms still outside and 10 day outlook lows only into the 40's still. El Nino? I hope it is mild like this the entire Winter.

Everybody else in colder climate areas in the world experiencing the same thing?

Hi, same here in Oslo, Norway. Just had a little of frost (-1 degree Celsius) at nighttime but daytime temps around 55 degree Fahrenheit. Hope we're having this all winter but don't count on it :-(

We were in the 80 &90's the entire month of October up until Friday when this rain rolled in. After 120 days of ZERO rain I'm now at 8.04" in the last 48 hours.

This has been one of the dryer and warmer October in a long time. Nights have been 10-15F above normal and the day around 5-10F above normal for the first three weeks.

Now we are getting some cool weather, only going into the upper 50 low 60's. November is usually only mid 50's. As long as the nights stay warmer things will stay outside for a little longer. So far we have hit 40F once in September and twice in October. But today theres a big chill in the air since were in a cloudy pattern. Went from high 50 to low 60's at night to low 40s making it feel more chilly than it really is.  Hope the dry and cool weather stay around with no frost or freeze yet. But it can only hold off for so long. Last two years the low for Oct was 37F.

Exactly same here. Watching forecast like a hawk but leaving potted stuff out and protection at the ready for in the ground stuff.

This Fall was going well until we had our first freeze last week, way earlier than normal here, luckily it was a one time thing, no freezing temperatures in the forecast either. Highs look to be in the 50s/60s with lows primarily in the 40's, too cold for me, especially after all the warmth we've been having.

I don't know what to think about the upcoming season..  could be bad could be good.  No first freeze yet.. and thus far we have had 2 'major' rain events... somewhat strange in that they lasted for 2+ days each.  Cold rain.. temperature hovering around 50. Looks to be el nino related.  If that pattern keeps up we will be looking at huge amounts of snow this year... but with increased cloudiness it may keep our lows from extremes.

I should expect the worst...I don't know how the new palms will handle the extreme cold and damp...   eeeg..  Time for a protection plan.

Say bye bye bougie...   I'm looking forward to the thorny crispiness!

Hey SailorBold, not to digress too far off-topic, but do Bougainvilleas stay like that all winter long in your region? I ask because I saw some in Texas which apparently remain unscathed all winter.  Here in the north of Florida, Bougainvilleas generally defoliate in winter (although, here, winter is an extremely short season) unless they are planted up against a building.  Two hours south of us in Tampa and Orlando, Bougainvillea grow into trees and look fantastic all winter long.  I am wondering if the dryness of your region spares them a bit.

If your bougainvillea defoliates, does it return to normal in the spring time?

Sorry, getting a bit off-topic....

Nope.. dead as a door nail right to ground level.  They were planted as 1 gallons last year.. and amazingly.. returned.  Very fast growth. Some of the stems are about as thick as my thumb.. so when it gets trimmed back I will be able to see how big the stumps are.. that should be interesting. Normally... it is extremely dry in the winter so that most likely helps with rot issues I'm guessing.

I'm surprised it returned.. but def. no resprouting from branches with the cold we have

SOOOOOO glad for the warm weather.  Had to relocate to Lincoln this last weekend and a frost would have been a real hassle for the container ranch.  That said, I'm up on a balcony again, so I'll likely pull everything in tonight as a precaution.  No canopy whatsoever where I am now!

You moved?  how many palms made the move with you and how did they handle it?

Everybody who wasn't already in my office made it just fine.  I have a north facing apartment again, but there's a big glass door to the balcony, I've still got all my grow lights and a single West facing window; so overall They're getting more light than they would have all winter in the basement.

Had to weed out a few undesirables, but all the palms made it through with no problems.  I donated my R.rivularis to the Lauritzen Gardens last summer, so I have no palms over 5 feet tall right now.  (but I do have an 8-foot avocado and a 6-foot pomelo...)  So, for now at least I don't have to worry about hitting the ceiling.

How did that go donating your one palm to Lauritzen gardens?  I've heard they don't like, or want to take peoples plants and palms. I tried to contact them but they never replied to my emails about it.  I'll have some palms in the future that will out grow my house and wanted to donate them there if possible.

Same here, lowest in my garden was 32F(30F in the cactus bed)

still got some Castor,Thai giant,Alocasia and even 4 0'clocks

still blooming along with Ice plants-we have had over 3" of rain

though (since I put the rain cover up over the cacti)

with some rough thunderstorms in November, not typical

of November for sure...1.25" last night with tornado watches.

Winds gusting 30-55mph are thrashing the tropicals though,

already broke off one of the Castor plants.

The lowest temps for me so far has been 34F but long range 2 weeks forecast says nothing below 40F. I’ll take it!

I have one banana that is blooming not bad since our daytime temps are only in the mid 50’s.

Theres a big tropical rain storm headed our way this week for the next four days, nights will go into the low 50’s and about 4-5” of rain.

I emailed, but they were kind of ridiculously busiy with the new enclosure at the time.  Eventually I just called until I got in contact with one of the specialists (i.e. not a student worker). It was pretty quick and easy after that, just pulled my car around back and unloaded.  Hearty handshake and depart.  Not sure what they did with it, but it's there.

lol, I'd have to go back and see.

Took me two full days to protect in the ground palms and bring others inside that were outside in pots. told my wife I was done buying palms for a while and she said(with a snarky attitude "right"!) lol

This Fall here in WV has been wonderfully mild so far, a couple dips down to 29 or 30 but that's it.  Tonight is supposed to be colder, forecast 21 degrees, bringing in my needle palm.

Corpus Christi, TX, near salt water, zone 9b/10a! Except when it isn't and everything gets nuked.

Here, yesterday the first frost (30.2ºF/-1ºC) took place, I spent a lot of time removing the frost from my car's windshield lol. Also, that night it snowed in the surrounding mountains (the photos were taken at 1300m/4265ft)
