I found this spider in the ceiling of my back patio... Any ideas what species? I relocated him to a better part of my yard.

Looks like a "wolf spider" of some kind. They don't make webs and pounce on their prey. (A cool, scary pet for a bad little boy.)

If I may interject so humbly Davey m'lad, I believe it is a banded orb spider

Okay, an even better pet for a bad old man.

Looks like an Orb spider to me. My garden has many of them. Just have to memorize where they build their webs as it isn't gun walking through one.

Ok.. so this is it.. rust orange in color.

Neoscona crucifera
(Spotted Orbweaver)

This species is relatively variable in color and sometimes pattern, but is most commonly seen sporting a rusty-red or golden orange color. The orb-shaped web is very large and is often constructed on buildings and other man-made structures, especially near outdoor lights. This species is most conspicuous in late summer and early fall.

Strange I keep seeing different ones every year.. this was last years..

What'll really mess with your head is when you realize that Toecutter is also Immortan Joe...

Yes...that last Mad Max was off the charts with the best action and cinematography of the bunch....but it was sorely lacking in character development, script and storyline. Too bad....could have been epic.

  • 3 months later...

When looking through photos for the Sunset thread here I ran across this spider photo I took from Sept 2001. It was outside our second-floor balcony sliding glass door and it was the largest spider I had ever seen at the time. Is an orb spider too? It was HUGE.

That would be my guess, it does look like the big Orbs that we get.

It is nice to know too that in the unlikely event that one bites you.........

"Venom toxicity - the bite of Orb-Weaving Spiders is of low risk (not toxic) to humans.
They are a non-aggressive group of spiders. Seldom bite."

Cheers Steve

It is not dead, it is just senescence.
