New Trachycarpus princeps

Ben in Norcal

Pretty psyched about today's new acquisition...a Trachycarpus princeps, at a size you don't usually see them (at least up here.) Went in the ground in one of my Trachy groves already!

I don't know, actually, Jim. Good question, I should ask Jason. BTW - he has one more. :winkie:

Nice garden, Ben. Which Cycad are you growing in the last picture? An Encephalartos?

Kind regards,

Wim.

A work in progress, Wim! You can actually see a small Macrozamia moorei on the very far right of that last picture, but I believe what you are noticing is an Encephalartos whitelockii. Great grower in my climate and gives that "Jurassic" look!

Thank you for all the kind comments, everyone!

Heard back from Jason, and he doesn't know an exact age for the T. princeps he got in - but at least 7 years old he says.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks Ben for posting, snagged the other one from Jason last week. It is gorgeous! I am so excited. My front bed gets coldest. Therefore, most of my plants are under my front eaves, which stretches out 3'. I just put in three

L. Hoenhi, and five L. Wed, from Florabunda this Spring. Now, if I can figure out out pics on I Phone, or if I can get some help, my front B. Moorei, is thriving- so exciting. It is further out, loves the filtered light. I have been babying this one for two years.

The guy had no Idea what it was.

I love the fact you posted a thread about yours..

cheers.

Ben, with your knowledge of seedlings, does this look like a princeps to you? I got it in a mixed batch of Licuala and Garry (coldplant.com) thinks it might be either a Trachy princeps or a tesan. Not sure if it's old enough to tell though...

John, what do the undersides of the leaves look like? Mine showed silver coloration very early.

That looks like a Tesan,Princeps has a pretty

direct route to divided leaves, usually they will

show color on that first divided fan.

Here are some Tesan...the palm in the bigger pot(right)is a standard Fortunei.

@Jimhardy: Do you mean with "standard Fortunei" this pink marked plant???

This seedling doesn’t look to me like a T. fortunei at all.

Pal, I've seen thousands of T. Fortunei seedlings at many growing grounds here in California and it looks just like a good 'ol fortunei

Oh really? Sorry! The "normal" T. fortunei which I got here in Germany in the 1970s and grew up from seed looked more like the L. fortunei "tesan" in the photo. They didn’t have so elongated juvenile leaves.
