Attalea butyracea: Four-Leaf Seedling

This palm germinated in my compost pile over a year ago. I had discarded the seed two years prior in frustration because it had done - nothing. Take my goof as a cautionary tale and a reminder that Attalea seeds take up to 5 years to germinate. My seedling grew slowly over winter but picked up speed during the heat, rain and humidity of summer. But as I already have a juvenile I germinated from the same mother palm in a Ft. Myers palm park, I don't have room for another specimen of this large species, so it needs a new owner.

Attaleas are seldom grown in the US, which is a shame as it is a spectacular palm. Trunking specimens are hardy in zones 10 and above. Non-trunking palms can survive in zones 9b, 9a. Leaves may burn in winter but as long as the growing point remains below ground, the palm will come back. It is otherwise slow growing and takes years to trunk. If you have room for a large, rare palm this one is for you.

The particulars:

Price: $20.00

Shipping: $12.75 outside FL ($7.00 inside FL). No shipping to HI or outside the US

Total: $32.75

Payment via Paypal

Palm will be sent Priority Mail in a large mailing tube without pot and most potting mix. I will pack roots in damp orchid moss, clear wrap and foil. Palm is already well hydrated from all the rain we've been having. I pack/mail on Mon or Tues only to destinations outside FL.

The mother palm is so tall I've never been able to take a decent photo of it. But I'm including photos of my juvenile offspring from her. PM me if you are interested
