Jubaea pollen

Perito

Recommended Posts

I just emasculated a large Jubaea inflorescence and have half a 15 gallon container of male flowers.

Will trade for 20% of the hybrid seeds you produce with it.

U.S. only. Please send me a PM if interested.

Thanks!

I just picked up Jubaea pollen last month from San Diego and pollenated all of my Pindo's. I wish I had more of them sending seed out so I could take you up on this.

Looks like you have two queens sitting right beside it. What is keeping it from getting contaminated from the queens?

Erik, no the pollen is not processed. It is a lot of male flowers cut off the inflorescence and I have it stored in an Ice chest. And up until now those Queens haven't been flowering. I have been trying to use Parajubaea cocoides pollen on the Jubaea but have been unsuccessful so far. I'm debating using one of the Queen palms instead this time in which case I won't have to be too concerned about a little contamination from the other Queens.

. Hopefully you will have success with the pollen you already have. My Jubaea is sending out new inflorescences about once a month so if you want some pollen in the future let me know.

I have never had success with shipping pollen like that and having it viable. Has anyone else? Unfortunately it is getting to hot here in Florida for the Butias they start aborting around this time of year.

There is probably a thread on Palmtalk somewhere on processing pollen. I am definitely no expert on hybridizing and don't mind being wisend up if anyone has suggestions that would help. My time is spread very thin already but if there is an easy way to process and people are actually interested in getting some of this pollen I would do it.

Jubaea pollen is time consuming to process due to the way the they open up after removed. Nothing like a queen or butia. I'll take some pollen next time so that we can have procedures in place beforehand.

. OK, shoot me a PM a little ahead of the time you'll be ready. The tree did produce it's own seeds for the first time last year and it flowers just about all year.
