My latest germinated coconut and 5 year old

The Palm Nut

Recommended Posts

Both were seeds, one from Dunk Island last September and my five year old from Cairns.

Just read about the Newport coconut dying sad but like mine which died a couple of years ago, it was planted as a seed back in 1990 so I got many years of bragging rights and with my two currently growing I believe the only ones certainly in Port Macquarie but there is one at Fosters just south of Port about an hours drive which looks to be about 10 years old and doing well.

Cheers

Mike

How can you grow a coconut in this climate ? Do you do any special treatments, protection, fertilizer... ¿? I would like a lot to try one too.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Macquarie#Climate

The averages are 27.6ºC-81.7F/18.3ºC-64.9F in the hottest month and 18.6ºC-65.5F/6.7ºC-44.1F in the coldest month according to that climate chart

I mean do you do someting buddy or all natural? I would like a lot if you can tell me what is the care you do, because I would like a lot to try planting one. It's marvelous that you are growing one in that climate! :yay:

The coconuts shown in my avatar are from the Canary Islands, Spain ! :)

Great to see you again here Mike and thanks for your pics. Your garden was always a huge inspiration for me when I lived in Perth.

My coconut growing days are over now at my new location. :(

Hi pRoeZa

I have tried and failed many times with the coconut and other palms for that matter, but one thing that became clear is make sure its in a good microclimate with plenty of sunshine during winter months. Little to no water during winter and good drainage. I have only my north facing part of the yard that I can plant these coconuts as other parts of the garden are just to cold with little sunshine. The little coconut may not survive this winter as we have had lots of rain lately and the ground is quite wet and some cold weather is just about on us, so time will tell.

Hi Tyrone

Yes I have seen some of your photos of the new place, will be quite a project for you, with all your experience your place will surely be a paradise in the years to come.

Do you ever checkout you old place to see how the garden is looking and how that coconut is doing?

Cheers

Mike

Yes, I was there last in February. The coconut was looking fine. It gets no protection now and just sails through winter. I hope to have Parajubaea and Beccariophoenix down here for the coconut look, but nothing beats the real thing IMO.

We may have to sell the Perth place.
