I was out gandering at the big old bird this weekend wondering how much trunk there was when I stood up and spied this at eye level!

I hope its not a bad thing as I'm about 50/50 on palms in my garden that flower as some meet their demise within 6 months of me spotting the inflorescence.. :bemused:

Davey m'lad, actually your perceived notion of a finless dolphin was close. Look closely and you'll see that it's a billfish regurgitating a 2 lb whole cod.

Bill - Stand back and clear plenty of room for that spathe. We arrived back at the farm last week and found our D. prestoniana had been very busy during the 7 months since our last visit. Below are pics before and after I clean it up. - gmp

Bill my D. prestoniana actually produce viable seed at that size when it first flowered. Your palm is looking great by the way.

I can't quite get in there now to take a pic, but good Lord is that thing huge!! The flower stalk is as big as my wrist!!

What's the reasoning for wanting to cut it off?? I'm sure it won't hurt the palm if you do but there is no way I would be cutting it off if it were on my presty.... Great growing, I love it!!

Actually I was serious Ed.... still undecided.. The reason is the last two "rare" palms I had that started to have a florescence were dead within a couple months. I know it needs more water now and thats now at a premium.

On the other hand, it does seem sacrilegious..

Very nice Bill!  I was surprised to not be able to find any large prestos for sale here on the big island. But looking forward to my little one getting big quickly and looking like yours one day.
