Masoala madagascariensis

This one has been in mostly shade for 5 years from a tiny plant but has grown steadily.

A friend thought its growth slow, but I have read that is normal for this species and that it is another palm we plant for future generations?

Who grows this one and who has seen in in Madagascar?

I hope to get to Masoala Park this October, but don't know if it is easily located there?

Cindy,

Looking good, and yes, these are definitely in the "slow" category! Would be exciting to see some mature specimens in Masoala, that's for sure! :)

Looking great Cindy, wish I grabbed a heap of these when they where available in 5" pots "years ago" in Oz good luck with the rest of its growth, not long and yours will be gaining great size esp with some more sun, Im saying "more sun" as pics from Bill A, Bo ( old garden, Karolyn's)) and Jeffs stunner. Bill Austin and Karolyn, any chance of an update of yours ?

Well then, here's more of Jeff's plant, plus a bonus shot of a somewhat younger one… should have had Jeff in the photos… really hard to get a feel of how big this plant is.

Cindy, hang in there. It will get faster as time goes by. I picked up one back in 2009 in a 4" container not having a clue what it was or what it would look like........and glad I did. It was labeled M. kona, but obviously it was labeled incorrectly.

Here it is today, much , much larger.

Very nice one Tim. Aren't you glad you picked up that small clueless palm now!

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!
