A Giant Buddha for southern Adelaide

Pip

Recommended Posts

Southern Adelaide is getting a new tourist attraction in the form of a Buddhist centre. Originally a 30 meter tall gold Buddha was planed to look out over the southern beaches but a compromise was found so here is a 18 meter tall granite Buddha.

The site is still under construction but soon the statue will be surrounded by gardens and cultural buildings.

I hope the gardens will be beautiful. These statues seem to pop up in odd places. There is a similar statue out in the California desert, just off the highway. Driving with friends to Mt. Whitney for a hike, we caught a glimpse of it, and we resolved to stop on the return trip. There was no one around, just this statue and a big spread of concrete leading to it. It was quite a peaceful moment.

That is going to look fabulous. They never seem to have any cultural niceties in bland old Brisbane. Remember the old joke ? Whats the difference between Brisbane and a tub of yoghurt ? Yoghurt has a live culture. Adelaide is such a civilised little city. Guess I will have to make do with the statue of Wally Lewis outside Lang Park football ground.

Some Monastery bamboo's ( Thyrostachys siamensis) and Buddah belly bamboo's dotted here n there at a great distance would look great and give much needed shade , look fwd to the end result.

Here's hoping Pete, bamboo is awesome . I have no idea what the gardens will look like. I hope something more interesting than ornamental pears and roses. The site is within 1km of the ocean and very windy. I'm waiting in anticipation as everyone else.
