Well here it is, almost certainly the first ever Butia germinated from a seed grown in the UK.

Bilbo,s tree produced a good crop last year, most seeds contained hollow chambers or endosperm without embryos, but a few embryos existed here and there.

So from the one tree growing in the impossible climate....here is the immaculate Butia conception.

Sorry for hijacking your thread Nigel, but it's always nice to hear the specialists. Congratulations by the way...

Talking about growing Butias in the impossible climate: I just received this nice one as a gift from a friend. Does it look like B. capitata or maybe another species? Would you guys place it in full sun? What about the watering schedule? Help me Albertooo?

Thanks in advance...

At this stage it´s near to impossible for me to ID it!

But i think B.capitatas aren´t impossible for you, specially the ´´real´´B.capitatas from Bahia and also the odoratas from southern Brazils dunes will like your climate!

 From were came this palm?

Yes Alberto is right, it could be anything at that age, although it does seem quite green .

I was thinking the exact same thing. It is a bit on the greener side than normal.

Congrats on the Immaculate Conception. Its pretty neat to think of Butias fruiting that far north, and setting a few viable seeds.

Too true Alberto...... last year was the warmest ever, and winter was the second warmest in 400 years of weather records.

Exactly 750 billion tons of CO2 each year thrown in the atmosphere...and we are all to blame folks...

Well, maybe if each one of us plants some 1500 palms a year to compensate....or should we buy some more oil company stocks? Ohhh, where did my carbon credits go?...

Congratulations mother Earth, almost 10 years are passed since Kyoto protocol... :P

Sad but true. Its somewhat of a good thing for us palm growers in the colder climates, but for the overall health of the planet, its bad, very, very, very bad.
