St. Helena comes out of isolation

Here's a little tidbit.

I'll bet no one on this board has been there. Napoleon was there, in exile till he died, supposedly of arsenic poisoning.

If I lived there, I'd have grave misgivings. This opens up ideas about tourism, etc, and who benefits from it.

Might be cool to go there now, before the invasion starts from Jo-Burg.

Actually, 737-800s operate into and out of Rio de Janeiro's Santos Dumont Airport with no difficulty. Two parallel runways, 4,200 ft and 4,341 ft long. Now, admittedly that's cutting it close and the pilots flying there have had special training for that airport and those flights are also shorter (domestic) flights, which means less fuel carried and less total weight. But a 6,000 ft runway at sea level is no big deal for a 737-800. I used to work at the old Malmö Bulltofta Airport, which had a 1,800 metre runway (5,905 FT) and we had 727-100s take off at max weight on a daily basis without any problems. Even the occasional DC-8-51, but not fully loaded and those were tight takeoffs. The 737-800 has much superior performance to either of these oldies. :)

Leilani Estates, 25 mls/40 km south of Hilo, Big Island of Hawai'i. Elevation 880 ft/270 m. Average rainfall 140 inches/3550 mm

I was amazed to read the island had a population of 4,200 residents. That is well over the almost 3000 the MUCH larger Falkland Islands have.

It is in the tropics, as opposed to off the coast of Argentina.

I stand corrected. Thanks, Bo!
