Dypsis sp dark mealy bug

Recommended Posts

14 months ago I planted two Dypsis sp Dark mealy bugs in the backyard. Well, since then, both have powered along quite nicely producing 2.5 leaves a year. With each new leaf being substantially bigger than the previous one it shouldn't be too long before they get some size about them.

Looking good Steve. They seem to like the climate here. Do yours get a nice coloured new leaf?

Gold Coast, Queensland Latitude 28S. Mild, Humid Subtropical climate. Rainfall - not consistent enough!

Yep, the new leaf has a brownish/reddish hue which fades over times.

Yes, on its way now Ben, :greenthumb: I grabbed a heap off you after seeing the Large, Stunning, very chunky specimens in FNQ, glad I did. :)

Re sp name, It wouldnt surprise me @ all if its Ceracea, when you see large starting to trunk specimens side by side of Bejouf and Dark Mealy they look very very similar apart from colour of course, anyway thats my thoughts. :)

Thanks for all of great photos everyone. You've made me very anxious to have our small one get to the stages of yours.

We've enjoyed a bit of rain around these parts in the last week, and noticed today the new spear on my Dypsis dark mealy bug starting to open.

Good looking stuff Ben, Steve, & Paul. These guys are pretty fast and the new leaf is pretty showy.

I gotta go check on mine and see how they're doing.

Bill, these should be an "easy grow" for Cali with a raised bed/large mound or soil thats "deep" well drained and " always very moist" in Summer and S/cloth above till they trunk. :)

Ron, same above for Florida esp a "large mound "above your high calcium soil..

Perry of SLO Palms had one that I saw last year, that was moving along in coastal Santa Barbara. He was pretty proud. I was in a hurry when I saw him last weekend, and forgot to check it out. He has been redoing his yard there and it is looking so good. This is hard to do part time, when you are living in one place and growing your palms for everyone else. Cecile

Nice palms guys, mine is fairly slow here, about 2 leaves a year, but it has that nice pinkish hue to them, so worth

the short lived splash of color.

It's been nearly two years since I started this thread and my Dypsis Dark Mealy Bug has grown considerably in that time.  Here's an updated pic since opening another new leaf last week.
