College freshman just got a record player

Hi everybody,

So, my sister who is wrapping up her first year of college at UCSD JUST got a record player. Here's what she's got so far:

post-195-0-04989200-1427158353_thumb.jpg

Elvis, Whitney Houston, and AC-DC

What else do you think I ought to get for her and send her way? I was thinking Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zepplin I or IV, Maybe Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, and maybe some New Kids On The Block- just kidding about that last one!

Anybody have any other great vinyl selection ideas I can send her? Discogs is a great site that I use for finding vinyl anything. Of course "Rave On" is out of the picture- she can look that up over here at my house ;)

Keep in mind that this is a 19 year old young lady who's only experience to "classic" (hurts me to say it too) stuff is that her father plays on satellite radio (classic rock)- so she's probably heard "that" stuff before, something a little different might keep her mind open instead of saying "That's what Dad listens to" .

Thanks for the ideas!

Pat

My first record was Iron Maiden's "The Number of the Beast." Still in my playlist to this day. I'm sure a 19-year old young lady will love that one.

If you are wanting to go "classic"

"Dark Side of the Moon"

Michael Jackson "Thriller"

pretty much any Beatles album

maybe Rolling Stones

More modern:

Radiohead "Kid A"

Daft Punk "Random Access Memories"

White Stripes "Elephant"

How about Barry White?

Or Donna Summer?

Or James Brown?

Everyone loves Abba, and for going classic, The Monkees predate The Beatles

If she likes music by the founders of rock: Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry (Johnny B Goode), Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin (what a voice), Everly Bros. Or R&B: Aretha Franklin, Supremes, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Doo Wop

If she likes instrumental music, how about swing & big bands: Glenn Miller (In the Mood - my favorite), Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, the Dorseys, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday

If she is musically daring: Bill Monroe, father of Bluegrass, Stanley Brothers, Carter Family, Hank Williams Sr, Peter, Paul & Mary

So much music to try. I still have many of my old vinyl LPs. Going to Giant Music 50 years ago was a visit to record heaven.

YIKES...a record player! I still have a turn table and over 600 vinals but I only listen to the music on my iphone because its mobile and easy. I would image it is hard to plug ear buds into the record player when jogging.

Second to Abba and Billie Holiday. Add to that some early Supremes (before they became Diana Ross & the Supremes), Joanie Mitchell's "Blue" and "Court and Spark", the Beach Boys - 1962, Crosby, Stills & Nash, 1969, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, "Déjà Vu,". Elton John, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". I could go on and on...

I don't know much about opera, but hearing a great aria on a turntable for some reason fascinates me.
