Been a debate all over everywhere but apparently not here yet, so where do you guys stand? What color is this dress? Seriously. People's answers might surprise you.

The lighting is really bad so I suppose you could say the dress is a pale blue, although I believe it is white. I just can't see any black at all in it and wonder if there is that great of a population where they are colorblind to gold?

In WestCoastGal's original post, do those of you who see black in the dress not see any gold or tan color in the palm trunk of her avatar pic?

I agree the lighting in the photo is bad and could distort the perceived colors. Behind the dress appears to be a black and white print, and the dress is different from that. My brain interprets the colors as white and metallic gold or bronze, but I can imagine the dress could be a pastel shade of lavender or light blue and olive green. Take a better photo! :lol2: And ditch the bolero jacket, not flattering with the dress. :lol2:

Oh this is too funny -- now that I have seen the "other photo", I can only see blue and black. The backlit nature of the photo plays with my brain's perception, telling me the dress is white in shadow, when it is blue not in shadow, and the black is actually overexposed, giving it a lighter cast. Very interesting.

And I still say to ditch the bolero jacket, which will add 15 years to the lady wearing the dress.

I'm seeing it bronze with lavender. The shade covers the dress thus reflecting ambient light from other objects onto the white portion of the dress.

The actual dress is blue and black but i see white and gold...so what gives? I took an online color blindness test and my results were normal. Hmmm?

_Keith, interesting. I've seen a few others on other websites have that response. Any chance you are color blind?

BTW when I look at the dress photo I see what I perceive as a white and gold trimmed dress taken in the shadows (so light blue and a tannish gold), but am sure it is a white and gold dress if seen in normal light and that's why I say it's white and gold. My hubby said he can't see the dress being white and gold at all. It is CLEARLY blue and black. Like AliceHunter, I can see where people might describe the white as maybe bluish, but to go from gold to black -- not seeing that at all.

I love reading people's responses to the question online. Some people take this as a joke and/or don't answer. Based on some polls about 75% describe the dress color as white and gold, 25% as blue and black; and most can't believe it when others say they see the other colors. My husband works with color images a lot at work and so when I showed him the image asked him what color he saw (didn't frame it a color choice at all) and was sure he had seen this on the web and was playing with me when he said blue and black. I have seen the green and purple on a few websites. A number of people have said they have gone back to the image and it changed colors for them. Just fascinating really. And doesn't it just make you wonder what color things really are that you didn't question before.

Kim, totally agree with you on the bolero. And from a fashion standpoint, white and gold would be a classic summer color choice. Blue dress with black lace...IMO...yuck!

Gizmodo has one of the better articles I've seen on why people are seeing it differently. Going into cones and rods in your eye. They also have a Photoshop color sampling to illustrate. And by the way some people tend to say younger people see blue/black and older guys white/gold. Hubby said maybe I have cataracts forming that are affecting the color perceived.

Apparently only 6% of us see "Other" than blue/black or white/gold. All kinds of mumbo-jumbo to explain the 94%. But where is my explanation?

Sorry, no chance I am color blind, but a good chance I made up what I thought was a dumb answer just to get a response.

The first time I saw it it was absolutely blue and black, no question about it. I later saw it from a different source and it was just as surely gold and white. So I went back to original source where I first saw it as blue, but this time I saw gold and white! Now all I see is gold and white, I can't get the blue and black back.

Pale blue:

and black, although it has a brownish tinge to it due to the bad quality of the photo (like those 'sepia' old photographs)

Looking at the dress in real life, I'm sure it will look blue(ish) and black to me.

If you haven't seen the dress as sold, here's it in a store window: http://www.nj.com/indulge/index.ssf/2015/02/the_dress_what_color_is_it.html

"Royal" Blue no less and Black. Only version it comes in with white is white and black.

Funny how the eye and mind work. I still look at the photo above and interpret the dress to be white and gold if it were to emerge from the shadows which is how I interpret the question first off of what color do you say this dress is, not literally what color do you see. But even then we White and Gold viewers are apparently wrong. LOL as I threw in the word "apparently" there. Still can't see what my DH sees. Frustrating.
