Glass pipes are big business in Washington and Colorado, LOL! :) My guess would be they make the person smell more like an ashtray.

Triode:

You ask an interesting question!

You've no doubt noted that some retro fashions for men have come back.

And pipes are retro, no doubt. The last person I know who smoked one (without trying to be funny) died in 2002. He loved his. We were plant buds from the get-go and he offered me a couple of pipes, which I declined. The tobacco he smoked had a very pleasant mild smell, unlike the biting bitter smell of cigarettes. Alas, Byron died of cancer of the plueral membrane.

I would bet that if medical marijuana really becomes widespread, pipes could become cool again. They lend themselves to embellishment and personalization like few other male accessories do.

(I had one of those weed pipes that looked like a plumbing fixture, like, 40 years ago.)

As for tobacco, not as much, except for serious rebels and iconoclasts.

ANCIENT SCKOOL . . . .

Brass, yes indeed. That was the preferred material. Mine was a combo of white and yellow brass -- very nice, actually, it's probably still at my brother's house somewhere. I've seen them made of porcelain and even cut glass.

The same reason that dry snuff and plug chewing tobacco has disappeared. It's a new generation...

That was still in fashion back in the 1990s. Some guys in law school used it, to the consternation of all others. (Spitting in cups, etc.)

7-11 in La Habra still sells Copenhagen, though I don't know how much of it. Someone buys some, I keep finding the little tins all over the place.

Used to smoke pipe, had a collection of a dozen or so briars and a few meerschaum (and my dad's old corncob).

Then turned 30

Then developed acid reflux

Then realized I could smoke or drink but not both anymore

Quit smoking the pipe

Oh yes, the Copenhagen is still very popular here in the SE USA. I just quite several years ago myself. I should have clarified I was referring to the dry snuff they use to call granny snuff, dry snuff (nasal snuff). I really do not know the official name of it?

The kind they used a small spoon to dip some out and inhale. Peach or Peachy snuff was a flavor.

I had several college professors that still smoked a pipe but that was nearly a decade ago.
